With big projects like the new University Medical Center and the future Iberville neighborhood underway, the Downtown Development District (DDD) is turning its attention to the development of Upper Canal Street, which extends roughly from Rampart and Basin Streets by the theaters to the new hospital being built.
DDD Executive Director Kurt Weigle tells 99.5FM his organization is getting ready to hire a firm to conduct a study on retail development along Upper Canal, in hopes of answering a number of questions.
"What's the demand for new retail, how many square feet of retail can we support, what types of retail would be most plausible in that part of downtown," Weigle said.
Weigle says they also want to know how retail will work with the future Iberville neighborhood.
"That's why we're undertaking this study is to understand how this retail can work within that residential, that mixed-use framework to create a truly walkable and exciting part of downtown," Weigle explained.
Weigle expects the study to start in the next 30 to 60 days.
