ERNEST GAINES On Demand
Louisiana literary master Ernest J. Gaines returns to WYLD-FM’s Sunday Journal with Hal Clark. Gaines discusses his award-winning novel, A Lesson Before Dying, a 2012 National Endowment for the Arts Big Read selection.
High school students metro-wide will read Gaines’ novel and participate in a variety of events coordinated by various NEA grant partners, including the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society, the Jefferson Parish Library, the State Library of Louisiana, the Louisiana State Museum and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. A general public reading kickoff happens Sunday, October 14th at the Cabildo at Jackson Square.
A Lesson Before Dying was made into an award-winning HBO film. Some of Gaines' other works that appeared as films include The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, A Gathering of Old Men and The Sky is Gray. Actress Cecily Tyson, who starred as Miss Jane Pittman, is scheduled to appear with Gaines during an event in New Orleans this November.
